“Serious play is serious work.”
— Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence)
Why do we adore watching outtakes from a famous film and why do we love live performances versus a recorded album? Why do we love watching two musicians “jam” and improvise and why does a brilliant, spontaneous sketch by an artist capture what the formal painting cannot? When we play, we experiment. When we experiment, we make breakthroughs. Often when there is uncertainty, we are in thrilling, creative territory. When we channel our play and think of it as a prototype, we are the one breaking norms, and often our own norms. As a creative coach, when we creatively play, we are amusing ourselves.
Don’t we all adore watching two talented people playing and having fun? Don’t we love watching an SNL skit when all of the characters are having the best of their time? The whole premise for improv comedy is being surprised!
Inventors are in a constant state of serious play. They are in a constant state of “why if.” Think about a playful road trip with your best friend. She’s driving and you are the copilot. You see a cool turnoff and you say “let’s take it.”
Great play has an element of adventure, and as creatives it’s very easy to not be playing enough. Play holds our interest. When play is channeled, and we build it into our serious, creative careers, we begin to innovate. Innovation will occur and is a magnet for commercial success.
