The Tension of Opposites Where Barnett Connected the Dots

What started out 18 months before as a risky, educated “hunch,” indeed delivered for Barnett’s then leadership of Patina Gallery in a way that it had never seen before!  Ivan had read “the tea leaves correctly” when Ivy Ross and he had their initial conversation.  And to this day, Barnett still couldn’t be happier as a reminder of that summer!  Each day, when brewing his coffee, he says “good morning to the favorite image of Steve Jobs” from Doug’s book!  Steve looking to the heavens with clasped hands, gesturing for the “Apple gods” to come through.  Barnett had successfully connected the dots himself as well. He had produced a tour-de-force. Barnett’s exhibition, The Tension of Opposites, was a superb melding of performing arts along with the creative art of jewelry making and internationally renowned photography.

    Challenges

In this ambitious project Barnett knew that Patina Gallery would have to shine alongside the world premiere of the opera. He suggested staging a spectacular photo shoot on the opera house’s main stage. They used 8-foot enlargements of Menuez’s images as a backdrop for models wearing visionary, tech-inspired jewelry. Additionally, securing the opera’s well-known outdoor stage in winter was a challenge, but Barnett embraced the opportunity.

Another challenge Barnett faced was coordinating the arrival of Menuez’s photographs and international jewelry pieces to the gallery. These elements had to arrive six weeks in advance for proper framing and staging. However, the final event would attract high-profile personalities, including Bates, Ross, and Menuez, and received glowing acclaim.

Ivan Barnett needed a jewelry element to coincide with either the opera or the photographs.  A breakthrough moment came. Jewelry artist Genevieve Howard, inspired by the opera’s score, created a one-of-a-kind piece. This synergy between art and music elevated the entire exhibition to new heights.

Finally, trust was essential. Barnett worked hard to gain the confidence of the influential collaborators. Handling financial logistics and coordinating artists from around the world added complexity. Ultimately, meticulous planning ensured a seamless event. All these challenges connected the dots for them to bring success to the exhibition.

    Solutions Provided by Serious Play

Barnett made sure that Patina Gallery’s collaboration with Menuez, Bates, and Ross brought history to life in the form of a one-of-a-kind exhibition. Ivan also made sure the gallery featured Menuez’s images of Steve Jobs. Both of these were coupled with innovative jewelry, that formed a visually compelling event that aligned perfectly with Santa Fe Opera’s world premiere.

The dynamic photo shoot on the Santa Fe Opera stage in winter was a logistical feat that paid off. Models posed in front of 8-foot images, bringing the synergy between technology and jewelry to life. Professional models, photographers, and set designers brought out the best of the event. Graphic design teams ensured that the promotion and artistic direction were flawless.

Where Barnett connected the dots is always an important element of any of the work he does. Barnett coordinated every element, from international jewelry shipments to media promotions and VIP announcements. A portion of sales were donated to the Santa Fe Opera, reinforcing the collaboration’s community spirit. Ivan made sure to oversee the writing about Steve Jobs to allow them to honor his genius, and bring historical significance to the gallery.

Barnett’s careful orchestration made it all appear effortless. Over 18 months, he nurtured the project’s momentum, even commissioning custom jewelry for the event and organizing a fashion show in the gallery. Despite challenges, Barnett successfully balanced the daily gallery operations with the demands of this groundbreaking exhibition.

The risks paid off, with the opera’s overwhelming success leading to additional performances. Bates won a Grammy, the photos sold, and Patina Gallery achieved global recognition. Finally, the full-page ad in the Opera Program Barnett commissioned further cemented the gallery’s status, with media coverage highlighting the convergence of fashion, photography, jewelry, and opera.

    Results

The event was a resounding success, brought widespread attention to Patina Gallery and drew visitors from around the world. Barnett noted that the gallery’s attendance skyrocketed throughout 2017. The collaboration earned widespread acclaim for both the gallery and the opera. Bates’ Grammy-winning libretto added to the triumph, while the exhibition’s stunning images and curated jewelry displays brought a fresh international awareness to the intersection of art, technology, and innovation.

The 25 Menuez images, paired with jewelry from distinguished artists, were widely celebrated. Almost all the photographs were sold to the Ross Perot Library, marking the exhibition as a pivotal moment in both Patina Gallery’s and Santa Fe’s cultural landscape.

    Conclusions

Ivan Barnett made sure that Patina Gallery not only gained the trust of the Santa Fe Opera but also established itself as a vibrant cultural hub through year-to-year collaborations where he had connected the dots. These partnerships brought fresh energy to the gallery, transforming it into a leading destination for cultural audiences. Being involved in a project alongside Steve Job’s legacy felt sacred.

Patina Gallery stood apart in Santa Fe’s competitive art scene, with the exhibition drawing 200 people on opening night.
